A native of St Joseph, MO, Nancy Brunson joins WRR with extensive experience in film, theater and opera. A background in private voice instruction and coaching; she taught music theory and history, drama, German, and French.
Nancy began singing at the age of 8 and formal voice instruction at the age of 13. As a teen, she went on to sing publicly in leading roles in musical theater. She received her Bachelor of Music from the University of Kansas, where she studied with Norman and Inci Bashar Paige, formerly of the Metropolitan Opera Company and the Turkish State Opera.
Awarded a Rotary International Scholarship to study Vocal Performance, Nancy chose to continue her studies at the famed Mozarteum in Salzburg, Austria (perhaps because one of her favorite musical roles was "Maria" in The Sound of Music). It was there that she fell in love with the German Lied (art song) and earned a Diploma in that discipline of music. She returned to do her graduate work in Vocal Performance on a full scholarship at the prestigious College Conservatory of Music at the University of Cincinnati, studying under such well-known teacher/performers as Italo Tajo, Jon Spong, and Patricia Berlin.
Nancy then went on to sing in various venues in the United States, eventually bringing her career to New York City. While in New York, she studied with Richard Hughes, Joan Dornemann of the Metropolitan Opera, and famed Italian mezzo-soprano, Carolina Segrera-Holden. Nancy has sung opera, operetta, and musical theater roles with regional performance companies across Europe and the United States. Some of her favorite roles are "The Queen of Night" in The Magic Flute, "Cunégonde" in Candide, "Nancy" in Oliver! and, of course, "Maria" in The Sound of Music. Nancy has also sung in cabaret and intimate venues in Los Angeles, New York, and Texas, performing such diverse repertoire as that of The Beatles, Edith Piaf, Linda Ronstadt, Emmy Lou Harris, Dolly Parton, Joni Mitchell, Judy Collins, Frank Sinatra, Judy Garland, Stephen Sondheim, Andrew Lloyd Weber, George Gershwin, and other Broadway greats. Her coach/accompanists have included such now well-known musicians as Michael Orland of American Idol fame and composer and musical director, Todd Schroeder.
Nancy also has a background of over 20 years as a talent agent and casting director in Hollywood, where her own performance sensibilities and skills helped her to successfully shepherd the careers of established and star name talent (such as Tyne Daly, Robert Urich, David Hasselhoff) as well as developing some of the stars of today, including Ryan Reynolds, Josh Peck, Judy Greer, Linda Cardellini, Derek Luke, and James Marsden. Her client base spanned performers in film, theater, and television. Her clients included Academy Award, Emmy, and Tony winners. As a casting director her company was twice awarded the Directors' Guild Award for outstanding national commercial casting.
When her reputation as a performer became widespread in the Hollywood community, she found herself coaching and teaching voice to many of her clients and their friends who found themselves needing guidance for musical auditions in theater, film, and television. That experience opened up an additional "side" career as an audition coach and voice instructor.
In 2009, Nancy met and married her husband, Hal, and moved to Texas. She is the proud mother of two sons, Trey and Matt.
