WRR now broadcasting in HD Radio

Billed as radio for the 21st Century and the most significant advancement in radio since the introduction of FM radio 50 years ago, HD Radio is at WRR.

What is HD Radio and how will it impact WRR listeners?

Developed by iBiquity Digital Corporation, HD Radio has been more than 10 years in the making. The technology allows for compact-disc-like quality audio signals to radio receivers along with new wireless data services such as station, song and artist identification, stock and news information, local traffic and weather, and more. It also allows broadcasters to use the current radio spectrum to transmit FM analog simultaneously with new higher quality digital signals. These digital signals eliminate the static, hiss, pops and fades associated with today's radio.

To completely benefit from HD Radio, listeners will need a receiver with HD Radio technology, but everyone should notice improvements in how the music sounds. Several companies are offering HD radios, and as additional companies, such as Sony and Bose, introduce HD Radios the price of the units will become more competitive. Currently, HD Radios are available for vehicle installation and some auto manufacturers are installing them in 2006 models.

WRR will be among the first of the local stations broadcasting totally digital.

What are the benefits of HD Radio technology?
There are a host of new benefits that HD Radio technology provides with the upgrade to digital broadcasting:

  • FM digital will have CD-like audio quality.
  • Static-free and crystal clear reception. Signal fades, static, hiss and pops will be a thing of the past.
  • Wireless data services to include On-Demand audio will be available to consumers. On-demand audio allows for the streaming of audio content providing more information on station programs, news, weather, and traffic-all at the touch of a button! Other wireless data services include the display of artist and song information, mobile commerce options and much more.
